Long-haul mushers: Fans, competitors gather for Lincoln start of Race to the Sky
LINCOLN – What started out as a tempestuous and bold idea 26 years ago has become a wild and vivid 25-year Montana tradition that celebrates the remaining bond between man and his best friend.
The 25th annual running of the Line to the Sky, a grueling 350-mile dog sled race through western Montana’s wonderful mountain landscape, began in earnest on Sunday with 15 mushers – including several female competitors – and their 12-dog sled teams.
“When we began this preposterous idea all those years ago, there weren’t that many long distance races in the Modulate 48,” said Jack Beckstrom, a founder of the contention. “We thought we needed to do something grand here in Montana.
“We’ve got the dreamboat of the country, hundreds of miles of trails, and we thought we could invent a Lower 48 Iditarod – that was the goal,” he said. “We wanted to form an event that when mushers came here and finished, they knew they had gifted something.”
In the end, that’s exactly what the small group of adventuring mushers created.
