Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Hermes Cosmopolitan SCA, the French maker of luxury handbags and silk scarves, reported an 8.6 percent better in fourth-quarter sales and said profit last year rose unexpectedly.

So-called widely known operating profit advanced “slightly” in 2009, according to Paris-based Hermes, which had a while ago predicted a decline of about 5 percent. Revenue in the three months through December climbed to 587.3 million euros ($803 million), the ensemble also said today, beating the 555 million- euro run-of-the-mill estimate of 23 analysts compiled by Bloomberg. Hermes is scheduled to statement full 2009 earnings on March 25.

Demand for luxury goods improved in the last three months of 2009, the proprietorship said, echoing comments late yesterday from larger rival LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA. Hermes has a design of restricting supplies of its priciest products, ensuring guy revenue as customers who have been on a waiting list for up to several years almost never cancel their orders.
